Elly and Zoro Roronoa did not meet in any wonderful, "love at first site" fashion. Elly somehow ended up in nekomata form in a small town near a graveyard and was immediately attacked by the residents who thought she was there to wreak havoc upon the dead. (She doesn't know how she got there to this day, the concussion she received from the stone-throwing muddled her wits).

Sanji and Zoro were drinking in the town's bar when a girl ran in screaming about the "monster" that had showed up. They ran off to fight the "evil beast" but soon found what could only be called a mob beating up on someone that didn't fight back. Zoro cleared the crowd and handed her over to Sanji so the quicker man could get her to their doctor right away. She woke up in Sanji's arms but kept passing out so that when Zoro asked her later what her name was she only remarked "stupid" before fainting again. Zoro called her "stupid cat" from that moment on, even though she remembered her name was Elly.

She remembered Sanji carrying her from the fighting and from that point on had a small crush on him. Sanji encouraged this as much as he could, giving her a special pet name ("Angel") and catering to her strange culinary desires (unlike the other girls she hates sweets but loves red meat, ale and heavy creams and milk). Elly was scarred by her past and remained in "cat" form a lot, snoozing like cats do and strolling around the ship in quad form. This is how she got to know Zoro so well. The big man always napped whenever he could and the haramaki made an excellent bed for an enterprising cat. After the first few times he gave up screaming at her and just left her alone. Sanji didn't bother her when she was in this form and she realized he couldn't love anyone that was not always human. Her crush started to slip.

Meanwhile, Roronoa Zoro was getting used to Elly always being around. He threw a haramaki at the foot of his bed at night for her, started to take notice of her whereabouts and (more importantly) started talking to her. Unlike all the bossy damned girls he knew, this one listened. For the first time in a long while he wanted to talk to a woman...even though she was a cat. Elly, on her side, was starting to feel odd about sharing his quarters sometimes. It was true she was in cat form and he never slipped and undressed in front of her, but she wanted to be there when he did. Suddenly she realized she had fallen in love with him and she was alarmed at the thought.

Unfortunately the crew also saw the way matters were going. One night while she was prowling about and not by the big man's side, she heard Sanji jokingly point out that Zoro "must really like Angel". She stopped to listen and the guys all started joking and prodding the swordsman until he blurted out that he "didn't like her"! Crushed, she reverted to human form to dwell in her own room and didn't speak to the big man for days. He finally came up to her and asked what her problem was. There was a massive argument and quite a lot of fighting but it all worked out in the end. When she told him why she'd been avoiding him he got angry and declared he hadn't lied. Sometime later in the fight he held her down and kissed her, proving himself. He loved her, not "liked" her. He never said the words but she understood.

Their relationship grew and on June 30, 2007 he asked her to marry him in true Zoro fashion. He struggled with the question until Sanji (who was there as well as it was her birthday party) pestered him enough to have him become furious. He'd simply yelled that he couldn't "ask someone to marry him" with a damned audience.

The Cutter: their ship

the cutter

Type: Cutter

Designation: "(The) Cutter"

Masthead: 3 swordblades

Rooms: 3 w/ kitchen + bath

Bed(s): 1 + w/pull out couch

Extra(s): 1 Glass Panel

The Cutter is the ship Elly and Zoro Roronoa travel in. The name of the ship style itself is "cutter" and Zoro didn't feel that it needed another name besides that when he heard it. He's generally not thrilled with the small ship - he calls it a "boat" -- but happy that they have privacy inside its lower decks.

Cutters were used chiefly in the Navy as scouts and dispatch boats, depending upon speed to get them out of trouble. They tended to be small tubby little craft rather deeper than one would think and very cramped for the crew. They carried guns more to offer defiance than for serious resistance to the enemy. They appear to to be carrying sails that were too big for her, but because of the deep draught, the large sails were needed to drive the ship through the water at speed. Later cutters had more sails than the one shown. The Navy usually had about 20 of these little vessels on the strength.

The Roronoas' Cutter has three swords struck off at the hilt and jammed into the mast. There's no figurehead, only a post that Elly (in nekomata form) seats herself on when they might have to fight another ship. She acts as a masthead, holding her tail over the swords until they get close enough to ram the other ship. Zoro doesn't consider this cowardly because he thinks most people would flee from him when they see who they're up against. The fact that the swords sometimes stick the two ships together gives him the opportunity to fight uninhibited.

the cutter interior

The Cutter is like all cutter ships, narrow and cramped on the outside deck with lots of rigging and sails. Her lower cabins are very deep, extending some distance below the water and providing an astonishing amount of room (even though it's still very small).

There is one shared bedroom with a pull out couch for visitors, a small rec room (most of which is filled with Zoro's weights), a bathroom with toilet and standing tub/shower. The kitchen has an area with a glass bottom so Elly can see the fish and/or anything that might be worth diving for below. Off to the side of the kitchen is the main table where they eat and read maps, etc. Much of the Cutter is devoted to storage space seeing as it is a small ship. It makes the most of what they have in rather ingenious ways.
